This indicator contains some alternative data to those specified by the United Nations (UN). This indicator is the most suitable match currently available.

This indicator reports on hate crime based on survey data (Crime Survey for England and Wales). Hate crime is also recorded by the police in England and Wales by police force area. The Crime Survey for England and Wales provides a better reflection of the extent of household and personal crime than police recorded statistics because the survey includes crimes that are not reported to, or recorded by, the police. The survey is also a better indicator of long-term trends because it is unaffected by changes in levels of reporting to the police or police recording practices. The Hate Crime in England and Wales bulletin publishes hate crime statistics based on both police recorded crime and the crime survey for England and Wales.

1. Totals for hate crime might not be equal to the sum of incidents in the related equality strands as the victim may have said the crime was motivated by more than one strand.

2. Three annual Crime Survey for England and Wales datasets are combined to provide a larger sample which can be used to produce robust estimates for hate crime.

3. Please note the y axis does not always go to 100% for ease of visualisation.
